Did you pull on your hood cable and have the knob fall apart in your hand? Eventually everyone will get tired of grabbing that pair of pliers just so you could open your hood. What about if an emergency arises and you have to get the hood open fast? It can’t happen if you don’t have a knob to grab a hold of. This scenario can be prevented.
You can’t replace just the knob on the 74 and newer cars, you have to replace the entire hood cable assembly. The problem with that design is that the 74-83 hood cables aren’t available new anymore. Putting on a used cable, if you can find one, is usually not going to last forever. It’s just a matter of time before that knob breaks off on that one to.
When a problem like that arises we try to find a practical solution so we decided to design and build a replacement knob that will never break. You will have to take a thread die of 6mm x 1.0 pitch and cut some threads on the end of the shaft for your hood cable assembly. The shaft has a couple of flats on it, but it will still accept threads just fine. Then you install the lock nut that we supply with our custom made knob, and then screw on the knob. Putting it at the proper angle for you then you just tighten down the lock nut and there you go. These knobs are hand made out of aluminum round stock, drilled and tapped, add a couple of finger grooves and then they’re polished.
Always make sure that you hood latch mechanism is properly adjusted. You should be able to easily pull the hood cable. If it pulls too hard, then you’re stressing the cable and it will eventually wear out and break.
Brief installation instructions will come with every knob. The 6mm x 1.0 pitch thread die is not included.
We can also drill these knobs so that they will thread right onto your 240 hood cable as well, but you have to let us know that when you order the knob. The 240 takes a smaller hole size than the newer first gen cars so we'll have to drill the hole size accordingly. We also offer a couple of other custom aluminum knobs for the 240 one of which has a Z inscribed in it. Call for details.
